Port of Los Angeles Adopts Clean Truck Program
Delivering on his promise to green one of Southern Californias economic engines and protect public health, Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa announced the Port of Los Angeles historic passage of the Clean Truck Program, requiring all 16,000 diesel trucks at the Port of Los Angeles to meet some of the toughest environmental standards in the nation. Today, Los Angeles has said enough is enough. When 1,200 lives are cut short every year by toxic emissions coming from the Port, we have a moral mandate to act fast and effectively, said Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa. Quick fixes are not enough, and when we say we want to slash air pollution at the Port of LA, we mean for the long haul.
Mayor Villaraigosa Announces Completion of Milestone 800,000 Potholes Repaired
Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa announced the completion of Operation Potholes 800,000th pothole repair. With Board of Public Works President Cynthia Ruiz, Bureau of Street Services Director Bill Robertson and members of the Citys Operation Pothole Patch-Up Squad on hand, Mayor Villaraigosa made the milestone street repair announcement at a news conference held at the intersection of Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard and Wadsworth Avenue in South Los Angeles. Following the announcement, Mayor Villaraigosa rolled up his sleeves, donned a Bureau of Street Services vest and boots, powered-up the patch-up machine and repaired the 800,000th pothole of the Operation Pothole program.
Mayor Villaraigosa Urges Harbor Commission to Adopt Plan to Help Local Residents Breathe Easier
Delivering on his promise to green one of Southern Californias economic engines and protect public health, Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa urged members of the Board of Harbor Commissioners to adopt all elements of the Clean Truck Program, requiring all trucks at the Port of Los Angeles to meet some of the toughest environmental standards in the nation. LA is committed to a Clean Truck Program that will clean and green our port for the long haul  ensuring that Southern Californians are breathing cleaner air for generations to come, Mayor Villaraigosa said. These recommendations pave the way toward less pollution and clear skies, and I urge the Harbor Commission to back this proposal and set this region on a course toward a greener, more sustainable future.
Mayor Villaraigosa Leads Day of Service in West Los Angeles
Celebrating the spirit of volunteerism and calling on all Angelenos to give back to their communities, Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa led the Citys annual Day of Service in Mar Vista, Del Rey and Venice, bringing local residents together to participate in over 50 community service projects throughout West Los Angeles. Joining Councilmember Bill Rosendahl, LAUSD Superintendent David Brewer and thousands of volunteers from around the City, Mayor Villaraigosa helped plant trees, paint community centers and homes, and celebrate the Persian New Year. He also encouraged fellow LA residents to participate in community service efforts coming to their neighborhoods in the future.
Mayor Villaraigosa Joins Top Local Designers to Launch LA Fashion Market
Highlighting the Citys emergence as a global fashion leader, Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa kicked off the LA Fashion Market with Councilmember Jan Perry, LA Fashion District Executive Director Kent Smith and top LA-based fashion designers Sue Wong and Allen B. Schwartz, and Christian Audigier representatives. With a $24 billion fashion industry, Los Angeles is fast becoming one of the most important fashion leaders in the world for design and manufacturing. The local fashion scene creates jobs for workers who specialize in textile, apparel and accessory design, pattern making, manufacturing, wholesale, retail and import/export. In the LA Fashion District alone, some 37,000 workers operate in 4,375 businesses.
Mayor Villaraigosa Provides Update on Citys Belt-Tightening Measures
Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa provided an update on the Citys belt-tightening measures to close the budget deficit, including preparations for possible layoffs and participation in the voluntary furlough program. In order to maintain our commitment to expanding public safety and providing essential city services, it is only prudent to prepare ourselves for the tough actions which may be necessary in the budget ahead, Mayor Villaraigosa said. Now is the time to lead deeper structural changes in the way we do business as a City for the long term, Mayor Villaraigosa said. In this demanding economic environment, we have no choice but to step up to the challenge, and start thinking broader to ensure our safety and future growth as a City.
Mayor Villaraigosa Instructs City Departments to Prepare for Layoffs
Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa announced that the City is preparing for layoffs to close a projected budget gap of between $300 and $500 million in the next fiscal year. In order to maintain our commitment to expanding public safety and providing essential city services, it is only prudent to prepare ourselves for the tough actions which may be necessary in the budget ahead, Mayor Villaraigosa said. At his monthly meeting with the City department general managers, Mayor Villaraigosa confirmed that the City is undertaking a layoff exercise to deal with the budget shortfall. The Mayor reiterated his commitment to police hiring.
Mayor Villaraigosa, Chief Bratton Announce Major Milestone in Police Hiring Campaign
Delivering on his pledge to put 1,000 new cops on the streets of the City, Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa, LAPD Chief William Bratton and Councilmembers Jack Weiss and Bill Rosendahl marked a major milestone in the Citys police hiring efforts, announcing that more than 500 police officers have been added to the force since July 2005. Expanding the ranks of the Los Angeles Police Department is the central priority of my administration and it is the central purpose of local government, Mayor Villaraigosa said. I will do everything in my power to protect the buildup of the LAPD. It is a promise we made to the residents of Los Angeles, and it is a promise I intend to keep.
Mayor Villaraigosa Rolls Out Welcome Mat for New Living Spaces Furniture Store in Van Nuys
Delivering on his pledge to create jobs and attract new sources of retail tax revenue to Los Angeles, Mayor Villaraigosa cut the ribbon on a brand new Living Spaces Furniture Store in Van Nuys. The 105,000 square foot home furnishings showroom is the companys first store in LA and brings at least 300 jobs to the San Fernando Valley along with the potential for more in the future. This Van Nuys store will provide job opportunities for the community while providing a convenient retail destination for LA shoppers, who can make sure their tax dollars stay in their city,  Mayor Villaraigosa said.
