Panorama City Traffic Cameras Help Catch Those Who Run Red Lights
Councilman Padilla was on hand in Panorama City to activate new traffic cameras that will provide automated enforcement of red light running violations. The cameras are at the intersection of Van Nuys and Parthenia. The goal of the cameras is to deter people from running lights and reduce both vehicle and pedestrian injuries and fatalities at the intersection.

Padilla, Police and Community Transforming North Hills
Police Chief Bratton, Mayor Villaraigosa, Councilman Alex Padilla and City Attorney Rocky Delgadillo joined the President of the North Hills Community Coordinated Council Tony Swan at a recent press conference to show off the success of the past 12 months suppressing crime and working with local merchants to transform the community. Padilla led the effort to convince Chief Bratton to implement his Safer City Initiative in the community of North Hills. The effort is based on George Kelling's Broken Windows approach. Fighting Drug Dealers by Removing Pay Phones
Councilman Padilla and City Attorney Rocky Delgadillo are working to greatly reduce the number of pay phones in neighborhoods plagued by drug dealing. Those selling drugs often use the pay phones to facilitate sales. In some areas there are as many as a dozen phones on one block. Pictured here are city workers using a jackhammer to remove a phone.

City Council Honors Commission Members
Councilmembers Alex Padilla and Jose Huizar honored members of the Presidents' Joint Commission on LAUSD Governance on September 29. The Commissioners contributed greatly to the debate on the future of LAUSD and how best to improve student achievement in the nation's second largest school district. Major Progress in Construction of Children's Museum at Hansen Dam
The Children's Museum of Los Angeles is in full construction at the corner of Osborne and Foothill in Lake View Terrace. The walls were formed on site and tilted up in August. The steel supports are now being assembled.
The Museum will compliment the Lake View Terrace Library and the new Boundless Playground being constructed nearby.

Beautiful Boundless Playground Nearing Completion at Hansen Dam
The creation of a beautiful new playground is nearing completion at Hansen Dam. The Boundless Playground is a playground for all children, with and without disabilities. This incredible playground is located in the park just south of the Lake View Terrace Library. Councilmember Padilla made sure it had the necessary funding to have it built right.

Padilla Releases First Pitch on Opening Day of Sylmar Baseball and Softball Season
Alex Padilla was on hand to pitch the first ball of the 2006 Baseball and Softball season at Sylmar Park. Padilla, who pitched for San Fernando High School and MIT still has a good arm and plays with the Los Angeles Police Department Baseball Team from time to time. Padilla took time to take pictures with some of the players.

Alex Lights Torch at Girl Scout Olympics

Padilla is Host for Mothers Day Luncheon
More than 150 local moms attended the second annual Mothers Day luncheon. The event was a great success. Alex thanked those in attendance for all they do to improve the local community and the quality of life for local families. Padilla was a key sponsor of the event and provided flowers for each mother who attended.

Padilla Works On Environmental Justice Issues with Pacoima Beautiful
This past Saturday, Councilmember Alex Padilla attended a community forum sponsored by Pacoima Beautiful. The forum provided local residents an opportunity to share with their elected officials concerns about the local environment. Alex Padilla committed to addressing the issue of idling commercial trucks in the area by creating a special task force. Alex Goes to Bat for Neighborhood Councils
Alex Padilla (pictured here swearing in the officers of the Sylmar Neighborhood Council) led the effort this week to ensure that Neighborhood Councils are represented on the Neighborhood Council Review Commission. The Commission is in the process of being created and will review and make recommendations of how to improve the neighborhood council system. City Council Approves Padilla Plan to Bring More Street Lighting to Pacoima
The Los Angeles City Council this week approved a plan by Councilmember Alex Padilla to bring new street lights to a neighborhood in Pacoima. $300,000 in funds will be used to pay for the hardware and the installation of the lights, and residents will only be charged an annual maintenance fee. Padilla has worked hard to find funding to bring the benefits of streetlights to area neighborhoods.

Padilla Honors Smoke Free Housing Owners
At the first regular meeting of the Los Angeles City Council in the San Fernando Valley Councilmember Alex Padilla took time out to honor property owners who have taken steps to make smoke free housing available to tenants. Padilla has been a City leader in the growing effort to set aside more housing units for families who do not want their health impacted by second hand smoke.

The Most Environmentally Friendly Library in the World!
Yes, it is true. The new Lake View Terrace Library at Foothill and Osborne was awarded the Platinum LEED standard from the U.S. Green Building Council becoming the first Library in the world to receive such an honor. On hand at the awards ceremony were Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa, Councilmember Tony Cardenas and students from nearby Fenton Avenue Charter School. Alex Padilla led the effort to include the environmentally friendly features into the library design and he then found the funds to pay for them. The result is that Lake View Terrace not only has a new Library, but the most environmentally friendly library in the world. Alex Padilla Urges Public to Exercise More
Councilmember Alex Padilla and County Director of Public Health Dr. Jonathan Fielding held a press conference in February sharing the results of a recent survey that found that since 1997 the average adult in L.A. County has gained 6 pounds. That means collectively County residents have gained 44 million pounds. As Chair of the Los Angeles Leadership Council of the American Diabetes Association, Alex is working to educate the public about the health risks associated with excess weight and obesity. Federal Credit Union Opens in Lake View Terrace
Alex Padilla, Congressman Brad Sherman and Zev Yaroslavsky were on hand to open the new Federal Credit Union in Lake View Terrace. Padilla has been working with Valley Economic Development Corporation to win approval for a Federal Credit Union for the Northeast San Fernando Valley. The Credit Union is the first branch of the Pacoima Development Federal Credit Union which is also working on opening a branch on Van Nuys Boulevard later this year.

Engineers, Equestrians and Firefighters Open Bridge In Lake View Terrace
Local residents, city engineers and firefighters were on hand to cut the ribbon at the recently rebuilt Osborne Street Bridge in Lake View Terrace. The bridge was the single largest casualty of the severe storms of January and February 2005. First an alternative temporary bridge was constructed to re-establish access for the community, then work began on rebuilding the old bridge. Alex Padilla led efforts to clear bureaucratic obstacles in order to quickly restore safe passage for local residents and emergency personnel like police and fire.

Not even a steady rain could dampen the spirits of local residents at the grand opening of Tobias Park in Panorama City on Saturday, January 14. The park opening was celebrated by scores of children and their parents.

Lake View Terrace Welcomes New Park
Councilman Alex Padilla was joined by local residents at the ribbon cutting of a new park at Hansen Dam. "The Bluffs" is located on Foothill Boulevard just east of the new Lake View Terrace Library and adjacent to the site of the new Children's Museum of Los Angeles. Local Volunteers Help Beautify Community
Local students took time out on a recent Saturday to help beautify a Pacoima neighborhood. At the annual Pacoima Pride Day young people with paint brushes and brooms fanned out to help neighbors improve their homes.

Working Together to Fight Crime
Councilman Padilla meets with LAPD Chief Jim McDonnell and then LAPD Foothill Division Capt. Kirk Albanese and residents of the San Fernando Gardens housing project in Pacoima to discuss crime prevention strategies. Since LAPD began stepped-up patrols of the area, arrests are up and crime is down.
