GARCETTI HEALTH CARE REFORM RESOLUTION PASSES L.A. CITY COUNCIL
The Los Angeles City Council became one of the first local governments to officially support President Obama's principles of health care reform when it passed a resolution on Wednesday.
"The health care crisis is a national issue, but one local leaders confront every day. It is long past time for change," said L.A. City Council President Eric Garcetti.
The resolution put the City of L.A. officially on record in support of health care reform that will:
- Reduce costs for families, businesses and government;
- Protect patients’ choice of doctors, hospitals and health plans; and
- Assure affordable, quality health care for all Americans.
Before voting on the resolution, Councilmembers heard testimony from Angelenos who shared their personal experiences with the difficulties of today’s health care system. Dr. Rab Razzak came to Council Chambers from his 13-hour overnight shift at Good Samaritan Hospital to share his perspective as a physician. Jack Dannibale told of his father’s decision to forgo chemotherapy at the hospital where he worked so that he could leave his sons money to go to college. He passed away days later.
These stories, these experiences, are not acceptable. Not here, not anywhere. We all know that it is time for real reform, and now this is the official position of the City of Los Angeles.

THANK YOU, CHIEF BRATTON
This week, Los Angeles Police Department Chief Bill Bratton announced that he will be leaving the department in October.
 "Chief Bratton has been an extraordinary leader for our police department, and I’d like to thank him for his exemplary service to the City of Los Angeles," said Council President Garcetti. "Our city is safer today because of Police Chief Bratton’s leadership, and I am optimistic that his legacy will make the LAPD a stronger institution for years to come."
Under Chief Bratton’s watch, crime rates in LA have plummeted to the lowest levels in decades, more officers have been put on our city's streets and in our neighborhoods, and the federal consent decree was lifted. |
