GO GREEN ON EARTH DAY AND EVERY DAY

This week, Los Angeles City Council President Eric Garcetti unveiled a new series of pamphlets designed to help local residents and business owners learn more about resources available to help them live and work in a more environmentally-sustainable manner.

"I have created a series of GO GREEN pamphlets to provide a one-stop source of information for multiple city programs administered by multiple agencies," said Council President Garcetti.

Copies of the GO GREEN series can be found in English and Spanish on Garcetti's website:

Garcetti also celebrated Earth Day with members of the Silver Lake business community, many of whom have pledged to discontinue the use of single-use plastic shopping bags at their establishments.  The Silver Lake Chamber of Commerce held an "Earth Day Ball" where local residents and workers brought their plastic bags which were used to make one giant plastic ball.  For more information and a complete list of Silver Lake businesses participating in the plastic bag pledge, click here.

“Many people cross Sunset Boulevard at Portia every day, and this new signalized crosswalk will make it safer for them when they do,” said Council President Garcetti.

The Los Angeles Department of Transportation and the Pedestrian Advisory Group comprised of Los Angeles residents had both identified the need for improved visibility of pedestrian crossing at this intersection. A study commissioned by the Department of Transportation found a higher than average number of accidents involving pedestrians at this intersection.

“Our primary concern is to provide safe passage for pedestrians and bicyclists across busy Sunset Boulevard. This new crosswalk will do just that” said Rita L. Robinson, General Manager, Department of Transportation.

GARCETTI ANNOUNCES WINNER IN EAST HOLLYWOOD BICYCLE RACK DESIGN COMPETITION

Council President Garcetti announced that Forester Rudolph’s SpokesQuotes design has been selected as the winner of the East Hollywood bicycle rack design competition.  The winning design is a simple, modern “speech bubble” shape that will be engraved with proverbs from the diverse cultural communities where they will be located.

“We asked the community to assist us with designing new bicycle racks that would serve their purpose as a safe place to lock bikes while also beautifying the community. The SpokesQuote design not only meets these goals, it also incorporates the rich cultural heritage of the East Hollywood community,” said Council President Garcetti.

The winning design was selected from among more than two dozen entries that were reviewed by a selection committee that included representatives from the Community Redevelopment Agency, L.A. Bicycle Coalition, L.A. Bike Writers Collective, East Hollywood Neighborhood Council, Barrio Planners (the architects for the East Hollywood Streetscape Plan), the L.A. Department of Transportation, the Little Armenia Chamber of Commerce, and Council President Garcetti’s office.

Rudolph is a resident of the Melrose Hill neighborhood.  His design must be approved by the East Hollywood Neighborhood Council and the Cultural Affairs Commission.  When the approval process is completed, approximately two dozen bicycle racks will be constructed and installed on Hollywood Boulevard between Western and Vermont as part of the comprehensive East Hollywood Streetscape Plan scheduled to begin later this year.
