GARCETTI DWELLS ON DESIGN AT CONFERENCE
This morning, L.A. City Council President Eric Garcetti addressed the Dwell on Design conference, where architects, designers, and others gathered for a vibrant discussion of modern design issues. The conference is hosted annually by Dwell Magazine and this is the first time it is being held in Los Angeles.
Council President Garcetti's remarks focused on the growing need to live more sustainably and the recent passage of the Green Building Ordinance that he authored. "This policy will have far-reaching implications beyond the nuts and bolts of building greener structures. It will impact the economy, fostering demand for greener products. It will have an impact on urban design as developers get credit for building near mass transit and located housing next to amenities and jobs. And it will influence how we in Los Angeles see design," he said.
In addition to the speakers and panels, the Dwell on Design exhibition (which runs through Sunday) features more than 200 exhibitors, including an entire neighborhood of pre-fab, landscaped and furnished homes.
NEW CITY BUDGET FOCUSES ON SAFER NEIGHBORHOODS
This week, Council President Garcetti joined his Council colleagues and Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa as the mayor signed into law the city budget for the fiscal year that begins on July 1. The budget focuses on keeping our streets and neighborhoods safe with additional funding to hire more police officers and expand gang prevention and intervention efforts.
"Despite a tough budget year, we are going to expand our police department, provide more opportunities for young people to keep them out of gangs, and we're going to provide resources to clean up graffiti and blight in our neighborhoods," said Council President Garcetti.
The budget also includes funding for core services such as street repaving and sidewalk repair.
FUTURE LEADERS VISIT CITY HALL
Council President Garcetti welcomed to City Hall ninth grade students from the Civitas School of Leadership, a charter high school located on the Belmont campus in the Temple-Beverly neighborhood just west of Downtown Los Angeles.
The students in Mr. Simonsen's biology class conducted a scientific study of the water quality at Echo Park Lake to test their hypothesis that the water quality is affecting the health of the lotus plants that grow there. They presented their findings before the Los Angeles City Council.
"These students are our future scientists, teachers, doctors, city councilmembers, and more. We're proud of the work that they are doing and of their interest in our community," said Council President Garcetti.
L.A. City Council President Eric Garcetti represents the Thirteenth Council District which includes all or part of the communities of Glassell Park, Little Armenia, Thai Town, Atwater Village, Elysian Valley, Echo Park, Historic Filipinotown, Silver Lake, East Hollywood and Hollywood. Councilmember Garcetti serves as President of the Los Angeles City Council.
