CITY OF LOS ANGELES PRIMARY NOMINATING ELECTION
CANDIDATE FILING DATES

DECLARATION OF INTENTION FILING STARTS JANUARY 8, 1997 AND ENDS JANUARY 13, 1997.

Filing for the City of Los Angeles 1997 municipal elections, will officially start on Wednesday, January 8, 1997 - the first day that citizens can file their Declarations of Intention to Become a Candidate. Candidates for Mayor, City Attorney, Controller and City Council also file Statements of Economic Interests, Form 721 and Statements of Acceptance or Rejection of Matching Funds.

Filing the Declaration of Intention is the first process in running for office in the April 8, 1997 Primary Nominating Election. On the April ballot, potential candidates for the offices of Mayor, City Attorney, Controller, City Council Districts 1, 3, 5, 7, 9, 11, 13 and 15, and Los Angeles Unified School District Board of Education Districts 2, 4 and 6 and members of the Board of Trustees of Los Angeles Community College District for Office Numbers 2, 4 and 6 must file their Declaration of Intention statements. The Declaration of Intention must be filed at the City Clerk's Election Division Office no later than Monday, January 13, 1997, 5:00 p.m.

NOMINATING PETITION CIRCULATION STARTS JANUARY 13, 1997 AND ENDS FEBRUARY 3, 1997.

January 13, 1997 is the first day candidates can pick up their nominating petitions. Nominating petitions must be picked by no later than Saturday, February 1, 1997 - by 12:00 Noon. All potential candidates must file their completed nominating petitions with the City Clerk's Election Division between Saturday, January 18, 1997 and Monday, February 3, 1997 by 5:00 p.m. All candidates can either pay a filing fee of $300 and submit valid signatures of at least 500 but no more than 1,000 registered voters within their districts, or pay no filing fee and submit valid signatures of at least 1,000 but no more than 2,000 registered voters.

All filings must take place at the City Clerk's Election Division at 700 E. Temple Street, Room B-23, Los Angeles CA. Filing dates are based on the City Charter and City Election Code.
