Presentation by Board Member Nick Melvoin, Los Angeles Unified School District (LAUSD), Board District Four, on plans for reopening schools and providing in-person instruction, and measures being taken to close the learning gap for the most vulnerable students; and possible Commission action.

LAUSD Board Member Melvoin was not able to attend the meeting.  In his stead, Alison Yoshimoto-Towery, Chief Opertions Manager, provided an overview of the LAUSD's efforts to prepare schools, teachers, students, and administrators for in-person instruction.  Ms Yoshimoto-Towery also discussed the support provided to all students and, in particular, vulnerable students, the opening of wellness centers throughout the district, and responded to questions from Commissioners.

Discussion on Council Motion (Cedillo - et al., Krekorian - et al.) relative to a request that the Los Angeles City Health Commission hold hearings focused on people experiencing homelessness and the delivery of health, mental health, and social services by the County of Los Angeles, Los Angeles Homeless Services Authority (LAHSA), and other non-governmental partners; and possible Commission action.

The Commissioners discussed holding a public hearing at the regular meeting, in November, and developing a list of agencies and institutions that should be invited to participate. Each Commissioner will provide the Interns with three contacts, to develop the list of guests, and for follow-up, including the Los Angeles Unified School District's homeless student services coordinators, the Saban Community Clinic, UCLA's School of Nursing, and organizations serving the re-entry population.

Commission President Mandel requested that Commissioners review the 2020 Annual Report in preparation for the discussion and development of the 2021 Annual Report, and review items such as hospital beds, EMS response time, and homeless services.
